Urgent appeal for donations to help fund rebuilding of the Carriacou Museum exhibit area.
The Carriacou Museum has experienced an unforeseen and serious termite infestation throughout the museum during July. As a result, the museum is temporarily closed to visitors for repairs and restoration. All artifacts and historical materials had to be removed and secured for the extermination.
The extent of the problem was much more than initially thought, and the entire building has been treated. The complete extermination included treating the roof of the building, the first and second floors, and trenching on the outside of the building at a total cost of $4,500. This cost does not include the removal and disposal of infested materials for replacing and displaying artifacts, the rewiring of the museum for improved lighting and air conditioning on both floors.
The closing of the museum for an indefinite period will have a serious impact on our financial situation, as the admission fees paid by visitors (the main source of income) will not be available. However, we are hoping to partially reopen the museum (shop only) as soon as possible, but that will not be enough to cover the expenses.
We are in the process of requesting proposals for the restoration and upgrade of the museum (materials and labour) which could go as high as $75,000. Therefore, we are soliciting your help in this effort to restore the museum to full operation. The museum has been acclaimed by U.N.E.S.C.O. as “the best little museum in the Caribbean.”
Your financial assistance in this project will certainly help in the preservation of the rich heritage of Carriacou and Petite Martinique for future generations.
